Obituary for Charlotte A. Hicks
Charlotte Augusta Hicks was born to Katherine and Reggie Mackey on July 23, 1945.
Charlotte graduated from St. Charles Catholic High School in Detroit, and attended Northwood University (formerly Northwood Institute) and Western Michigan University, where she studied early childhood education.
Charlotte married Jefferson Hicks on August 29, 1970 at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, (now St. Matthew’s and St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church) where they attended regularly. Charlotte and Jeff became the very proud parents of four children, and she truly embraced her role as a “stay-at-home” mom teaching each of her children colors and how to read before they entered kindergarten. Charlotte also worked alongside her husband in his business life, serving as his office manager in their family businesses for many years. Later in life, Charlotte became a certified medical assistant and worked as a phlebotomist over the course of the past 20 years.
Charlotte also shared her love of music with her children from the time they were born. They grew up listening to the classic hits of the “70’s & 80’s” before they could walk and talk. She enjoyed having her own personal “concerts” with a glass of wine while listening to the sounds of Barbara Streisand, Johnny Mathis, Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder and many other artists on the vinyl LP’s that we still have today. Charlotte also enjoyed watching movies, reading books and the company of family and friends. Her home was often the site of many holiday celebrations, parties and impromptu gatherings. Upon arrival, she would always greet you with a cheery “Hey Darling!”
On Saturday, April 23, 2016, Charlotte earned her wings and God added another flower to His heavenly garden where she rejoined her husband Jefferson. She was also pre-deceased in death by her step-father Lloyd Hickman. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving mother Katherine, her adoring children Cortney, Dorie, Jeremiah and Rondell, siblings Jonathan (Beatrice), Stacey, Dirk and Eraina, sisters-in-law Marie (Bill) Brooks, Annie (James, pre-deceased) Guinn and Nellie (James) Rice and Pauline DeSessure, life-long friends: Greta Anderson, Sandra Clark, Debra Rhodes and Carolyn White; devoted surrogate daughter LaShawn Griffith-Bates and host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
